Characters
Marc Renton: is the narrator. He is a drug addict, who wants to get rid of his addiction. He had no chance to get clear alone, but when his parents helped him, he was successful.
Spud: is a hanger on. He is a bit stupid and very calm. He is also addicted to drugs.
Sick Boy: loves movies. He is a great fan of James Bond. And he is a drug addict too.
Tommy: likes football. He is not a drug addict because he hates drugs.
Francis Begbie: is quickly losing his temper and is very violent. He is also not addicted to drugs and hates Heroin, but he is an alcoholic. The others are afraid of him.
Dianne: is a young girl, who is in love with Marc. When she made love with Marc, he did not know that she is a minor pupil.
Lizzie: She is the girlfriend of Tommy. She is addicted to drugs.
Plot
The Film is narrated from Marc Renton. It starts with a flash-forward, when Marc, Spud, Sick Boy, Tommy, and Begbie were running away after stealing something. He is asking the viewer, why someone should choose a normal life, if he can also have everything – meaning living with drugs.
Marc Renton and Sick Boy want to start a live without drugs, but they are taking one “last hit” after the other. Later, Marc and his friends went to a club, to get, what they were missing… sex.
Everyone had a quite complicated night: Marc went with Dianne, and made love with her. The next day he meets her parents, and recognizes that she is a minor schoolgirl. He wants to break up their relationship, but she blackmailed him, so that he had to stand with her. Tommy went home with Lizzie. There they wanted to watch a porn movie, which was self-made with their camera, but the movie was not there anymore, because Marc had stolen it before. So Lizzie was so angry, that she became his ex. Spud also went with his girlfriend, but he was too drunk, to made love with her. The next day, he woke up and lay in his own shit.
Lizzie’s baby dies and everyone is depressed. They started stealing, and one day, Marc and Spud got caught. (It was the first scene.) Spud had to go to prison, and Marc became free. He took an overdose of heroin and had to go to a hospital. Now his parents helped him, to get rid of the drugs. (It was a very hard time for Marc, when he is locked in his old children’s room.) He was successful, and became clear. Marc is getting a Job in London and earning his own money. But then Begbie came to his flat to hide from the police. Marc let him in, because he thought, that he had to help him, because he is a so called “mate”.
Tommy died, and so they went back to Scotland. Spud was out of jail and sober too. They had a plan, how to earn some money: they bought heroin for 2.000 pounds and wanted to sell it for 20.000 pounds. In the end, they got 16.000 and were really happy about it.
The next morning, Marc stole the money. Spud had seen everything, but did not say a word. Marc is going to start a new live – without his mates. Begbie was very angry.
In the last scene, you can see when Spud is finding 2.000 pounds in a suite case.
