In the following text I want to summarize my results about the project “Civil Rights Movement in America”.
America’s population has always been separated in two parts: The white population and the black population. As you probably know the white part has always oppressed black part. Black people didn’t have the same rights and they were even persecuted sometimes. They had to do jobs the whites didn’t want to do, the children couldn't go to the same schools as whites, they received a very low payment, and they couldn’t sit on the same bus or theatre seats and use the same public toilets. Many personalities, especially black people, wanted to change this situation. The first person who succeeded in this was Martin Luther King, who was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. He fought for the equality of black people. His passion for his dream killed him in 1968. King’s most famous speech is “I Have a Dream” in which he shares thoughts for a new America in which black and white people live together. Rosa Parks was a black woman who refused to give her bus seat to a white man. She was arrested and this incident started a protest, which was led by MLK. For one year the black people didn’t use any public transport. Finally, segregation on the buses and in whole Alabama was declared illegal.
Today, the official law says that black and white people are equal but it is a fact that many blacks earn less than whites doing the same job or some white bosses prefer employing people from the same race. All in all there are still disadvantages for the black population but you can say that the situation became a lot of better through heroes like MLK. Now we have to look forward and to be confident that someday black and white people will be the same.
