Book Report
Abomination
By Robert Swindells
Martha is a twelve-year-old kid, who suffers under her parents. Her mother makes her clothes and sometimes her father beats her up. But this is not unusual in the sect which they are in. They have no TV-set or Computer. The worst thing of all is her big secret, which she is not allowed to tell anybody: ABOMINATION!
Martha gets spotted every day at school. One day she makes friends with a boy called Scott, who is very nice. First he does not know why he likes her but later he really loves her. When the other pupils find out that he loves her, they beat him up, and Martha has to help Scott to get home.
Martha is not allowed to go out because her mother and her father are working during the day and someone has to look after Abomination. But sometimes she has to do some shopping. When she does so, Scott gets the chance to meet Martha. However, Martha says that he is not allowed to follow her home.
After a while he begins asking her a lot of questions and she tells him about being beaten by her father sometimes. Later, Scott talks to his mother asking her for help, but she says that she cannot do anything if there is no proof.
Answering Scott’s questions Martha tells him one thing after the other about her and her older sister Mary who left the family when she was sixteen-year-old.. Then she shows him the house and tells him the last secret: Abomination is a six-year-old child who lives in the cellar. It is Mary’s child, but Mary does not know that she has got a child.
Scott searches Mary in the Internet and after some time he finds her. He tells her all about Martha and Abomination.
Next day Mary stands in front of Martha’s house, knocking on the door. Then she goes in, takes Abomination and Martha and drives away. Martha is over the moon. She does not hate her parents, but is happy that she is with Mary. She is going to mail Scott, telling him what happened and that maybe they will see each other again.
Mary is not going to call her child Abomination, she is calling him Jim!
THE END
Personal opinion:
The book is written in an unusual way: Sometimes Scott tells the story and sometimes Martha tells the story. First I wondered but after some time I thought this is quite a good style.
I like the book a lot. It is easy to read and not too long. The story is very interesting and thrilling and is not boring. Sometimes I felt Martha’s emotions, her desperate helpless and her happiness.
I really do recommend this book.
