The „Author“: Go Ask Alice doesn’t have an official author. The book is based on the actual diary of a fifteen-year-old girl who is a drug user. She writes her diary in a highly personal and specific chronicle way. The editors (publisher) want to give insights into the increasingly complicated world in which we live. Names, dates, placed and certain events have been changed in accordance (Einverständnis) with the wishes of those concerned.

The Story: The Story is about a girl called Alice who starts writing her diary when she’s almost 15 years old.

Alice is an ordinary, insecure, average girl. She has lots of ups and downs like a normal teenager. When her family moves to another city, she’s very lonely until she finds her friend Beth. Alice is happy that they have met but in the summer holidays, Alice visits her grandparents, where she starts to go to Parties. On one of those she undeliberatly (unabsichtlich) takes acid (LSD) and she likes it! After that she starts dating and gets to know Bill who introduces her to speed and torpedos. Not much time passes and Alice has sex the first time. When she takes drugs she always says that it’d be the last time but it’s not and so she tries marijuana and amphetamines. At this time the reader gets to know her fears and fealings very intensively. Alice doesn’t know what to do anymore and so she lives in the streets as a prostitute.

After some time she’s ashamed of what she’s doing so she wants to come clean but her ex-clique wants to keep her and gives her acid. In the following horrortrip she hurts herself badly. But she gets away from drugs through rehab. Alice finds clean friends, who she thinks she loves. She stops writing her diary, but in the last entries the the reader finds out that she wants to share her fears and problems with friends and relatives.

In the end there’s an epilogue in which the editors say that Alice died three weeks after the last entry of an overdose. It doesn’t say how this happened.

My Opinion: Go Ask Alice is one of the best books I’ve ever read and usually at this part I say stuff like „I would recommend it to everyone, who likes diary-stories which are true, …“ or something like that but this time I (and I really mean it) recommend it to everyone, any age.

A different ending:

After the subject of this book finished her diary and decided not to keep another diary she went back to school again and graduated successfully. Her friend Beth, who is Christian, invited her to her protestant church. “Alice” enjoyed being there because of the joy she could feel and after some time she got saved. A few months later she decided to get baptized. She says she didn’t regret this step in any second of her life and she likes her life as a Christian 1000 times better than her life as a drug user because, for her, Jesus is a bigger addiction than any drug on this planet. In her church she prays a lot for all her old friends and for other drug addicted people on the streets. Alice founded a center for all drug users with three other people from her church. They can come to their church and get food and drinks there. If they want they can stay and listen to a message, if they don’t it is also fine for them. Alice calls this center “Dream Center II”; she copied the name from “Dream Center L.A.” which is also a church which helps addicted people.
