The Hours
(from eternity to eternity)
„The Hours“ was produced in 2002 by Stephen Doldry. The story describes one day in the life of three woman living on different places and in different times. Their lives are connected with each other by certain things, esspecially the book „Mrs Dalloway“ by Virginia Woolf plays an important part in their stories. All of them are confronted with suicide and the problem of unhappiness. The film shows the differnet ways in which these three woman handle their unhappiness as well as many things their lives have in common.
Description of the persons
Virginia Woolf (played by Nicole Kidman):
Virginia Woolf is a famous British author living in Sussex in 1923. Because of her mental illness she was forced to move from London to the suburb. Her husband, Leonard Woolf, always supports her. Virginia Woolf tries to escape from her desperation and her sadness and so she writes books, in order to distract herself from her unhappiness. Finally she decides to committ suicide.
Laura Brown (played by Julianne Moore):
Laura Brown lives in Los Angeles in 1952. Although she has a lovely family that loves her, she is also very sad and unsattisfied. In the story of „Mrs Dalloway“ she tries to find an opportunity to solve her problems and so she also wants to commit suicide, which she is not able to. Laura Brown decides to stay allive, leaves her family alone and starts a new life in Kanada.
Clarissa Vaughan (played by Meryl Streep):
Clarissa Voughan is a proofreader living in New York in 2002. She has her own methode to live with her unhappiness. Instead of thinking about it she covers up her sadness. She seems to be happy and gives parties all the time. That is why she is so similar to „Mrs Dalloway“ herself. Her friend, who works as a writer, suffers from AIDS and won an important award in literature. Because of his success Clarissa organizes a party for him, which he does not want at all. But Clarissa does not care about it. Finally her friend also committs suicide.
„The Hours“ got a lot of awards including: 1 Oscar, 2 Golden Globes, 3 Silver Bears, 1 Golden Lola and 2 Bafta Awards. It was a great success!
